Mig Productions has produced a straightforward upgrade set for the JS-II Soviet Heavy Tank designed to replicate, in photo-etch, stand-off armor designed to ward-off threats from German Panzerfaust or Panzerschreck crews.

This particular set, designated MP 35-504 in the Mig catalog, comes very well packaged with the single photo-etched fret sealed in its own plastic sleeve and then placed inside a clear plastic zip-lock type bag with a cardboard backing to provide some stiffness. This should prevent any damage during shipping and my sample arrived in good condition.

The set doesn't contain any written instructions and the only assistance provided to the builder comes via the back of the cardboard backing in the packaging. On the back a single black-and-white photo showing one side of a JS II turret with the stand-off armor mounted along with 2 color photos of an assembled and mounted set are provided. From this it is presumed that enough information is presented to allow you to build the set and install on the appropriate model surfaces and this set is clearly aimed at those with PE experience and not the beginner.

The set is simple enough, consisting of two long photo-etch screen sections per side that will need to be bent to the proper angles and separate frames attached for mounting to the turret. Each frame is provided as a single piece that will also need to be bent to the proper angled shape with separate small bolts provided for the exterior face for added detail.

Overall a good quality set that will be sure to turn heads at a model show if you decide to mount these on your JS-II. The lack of instructions and reliance strictly on small photos will make the job more challenging than perhaps it should be and is therefore recommended only for the experienced PE user.

Highs: Very well packaged.Clean Etch on the sheets
Lows: No instruction sheet provided.
Verdict: A nicely done set.Clear Etch to all parts even though some are quite small.

Was this armour only used on the JS-2 in the battle for Berlin or was it used in earlier battles?

Good review Jeff! I learned something new today. I've seen the bed spring armor on the T34/85's but not this on a JS. Thanks!

Well would have to ask Mig on that. I could not find any other areas of use. Kind of what he does best One of a kind things obscure.
