Introduction

The more I become acquainted with Romeo Models and their range of miniatures, the more and more they appeal to me. While Romeo share the same artists (sculptors and painters) and maintain the same high standards of quality as Pegaso Models, the ranges do not clash competitively by doing alternative subjects.

Sicilian based Romeo Models have in their range a very nice subject, sculpted by Historicus Forma member Maurizio Bruno, and the subject of this review: the Japanese Warrior Monk, in 54mm white metal.

The kit

A blue colored box with 2 white thick foam sheets safely encases the figure’s 9 white metal pieces. The quality of the metal parts is, as expected, extremely high; with smooth surfaces, and that need little more than a quick wipe with fine steel wool to polish the figure.

Enclosed are: historical notes by Marco Giuliani (in both English and Italian); and a very detailed and accurate piece-by-piece paint guide.

Pieces:

  • Torso
  • Left foot
  • Right foot
  • Right arm
  • Left Arm
  • Naginata
  • Scabbard – Sword
  • Head
  • Square Base with Stone floor texture

Quality and Detail

The sculpted detail is, as expected from so experienced a sculptor, exceptional. As is the high quality casting; clean lines and clear part definitions define this figure. The characteristically attired figure, and dynamic action battle pose, adds to the final result.

The quality of the white metal is excellent and made clear by the smooth, clean surfaces of the pieces.

While a miniscule mold line ran along the sides of some of the parts, this was easily removed by a gentle wipe of steel wool. This also serves to polish the metal. Finally, after a wash with a mild detergent, the figure is sparkling clean and ready for priming.

Dry fitting the parts indicated that the figure did not require any putty or correcting upon assembly.

Painting

I would class this as an intermediate level figure for difficulty of painting.

While there may not be many colors, there are various detailed areas of clothing, which need individual attention. Of course, the high quality of the sculpt will help a lot, and if you choose colors carefully and match them harmoniously you will have the result you deserve. Color combinations and choices are not limited to only one scheme and the modeler has a multitude of possible color combinations to choose according to the informational text and painting guide

Final Verdict

Romeo models is definitely among the leading figure manufacturers. This figure, as with the rest of their range, boasts high quality materials, castings and leading sculptors and painters. Top that off with the Pegaso quality guarantee! What more you need? Get this figure and start painting!

Highly Recommended

On behalf of Historicus Forma, I wish to thank Lorenzo and Romeo Models for the review sample.

About Costas Rodopoulos (Major_Goose)
FROM: KIKLADHES, GREECE / Ελλάδα

I started modelling 27 years ago with some 1/72 planes and military vehicles. Soon the diorama bug got into me and with Sheperd Paynes books I dug in. I loved to build dioramas and military vehicles till the Vietnam Era. I don't like modern stuff so much. 4 years ago I had a crush on figure painti...
