a closer look

Written by Robert Hargis and Starr Sinton and illustrated by Ramiro Bujeiro, Osprey presents another interesting book.
The book starts off with a short history of awards in the US Services, or actually the lack of them, in the early days. Covered is the idea, and inception of the US Naval Medal of Honor.

the real heroes

Here we get into the real meat and potatoes of the book. Done in the usual layout, the photos show the changes in the Navy Medal of Honor over the years. Each Recipient covered has his portrait displayed in the section telling of his deeds and actions.

Starting out with Cassin Young, his actions are covered, and a short write up of his later Navy career, up to the time of his death, commanding the San Francisco during Guadalcanal. This sets the path for the coverage of the other recipients.

This book includes some excellent reading about real heroes. As is usual, the color plates are excellent, and captions are found in the rear section of the book. Make sure you read these descriptions, because three additional award recipients deeds are cover there. The heroics of these men, in action and under fire, are amazing.

in conclusion

I recommend this book to anyone who maybe interested in reading a little about some real heroes.

I bought this book at Barnes and Nobles.

SUMMARY
Written in the usual Osprey format, this means a no nonsense approach to covering 25 of the US Navy and Marine Corps recipients of the Medal of Honor during World War Two. If you are looking for life histories, or other fluffy fillers, you are not going to find them here. It is written clearly and concisely covering the action and reason for awarding the Medal of Honor.

About Dave O'Meara (Grumpyoldman)
FROM: FLORIDA, UNITED STATES

I'm rewriting this in a much more humoristic way, to help over inflate my ego, and place my self on a pedestal, because I don't have a life, and plastic models are the only thing I live for. I plead guilty as charged to excessive babble, light hearted humor, and continued encouragement to youngsters...
