Introduction

Pity the poor Gama Goat, much maligned in life, and much maligned in model form (disclaimer: I like the kit, its simplicity was a breath of fresh air). To help alleviate a bit of the stress that the poor Goat must be feeling Legend Productions has released a nice stowage set, LF1276 that should help make the Goat a bit more presentable.

Contents

Inside the standard sized Legend Productions box you will find 21 pieces of well-cast pieces of resin inside a zip lock baggy along with one thin card stock sheet of C-ration boxes.
The resin breaks down like this;
  • One large casting for a canvas soft top for the cab area
  • One large casting for the trailer bed that combines a large tarped up roll of some gear, a 55 gallon drum, and a couple of smaller bags of equipment. These pieces are all cast together and are formed to fit perfectly into the trailer
  • A pair of ALICE packs, both of which are stuffed full
  • Two full duffle bags and one additional roll of equipment that is well strapped up
  • 3 ammo cans of 7.62mm ammo
  • 4 cans of .50cal ammo
  • 2 wooden crates of 7.62mm ammo
  • Two 20mm ammo cans, one with a cloth covering
  • 2 five gallon jerry cans, one strapped and buckled the other loose
  • One slightly banged up metal stowage crate
  • A card stock sheet with 3 C-ration cases to cut out and fold up

Review

Like we have come to expect from Legend Productions, everything here is top notch. No pinholes, air bubbles, or imperfection anywhere on any of the castings. The level of detail is nothing short of phenomenal, every strap, buckle, wrinkle, knot, and fold is well rendered with nothing to give pause.

The C-ration boxes, of which there are three, provide both the box and the outer sleeve. A nice touch that is often overlooked.

The soft top for the cab of the Goat is very nice, the fit appears spot on. The additional detail is superlative, snaps, seams, canvas stretching and stressing appears perfect to my eye. One caveat, the interior is not detailed, so if you were hoping for something like that you will need to add the interior frame.

While the set is marketed for the M561 Gama Goat, outside of the canvas top and the form fitted piece for the trailer (which could be used in other applications with a bit of work with file and sandpaper) the rest of the pieces of stowage would be appropriate for any late Vietnam era setting up through the mid 1980ís at least with some pieces still relevant even for models of more modern vehicles.

Conclusion

A highly useful set, a new load all ready to go for the trailer and the incredibly well done soft top would make this one a winner even without the remainder of the goodies that Legend Productions provides. The remainder of the bits and bobs are all very well done; Legend Productions is perhaps the very best in the resin aftermarket business, and all of these pieces are a testament to that.

SUMMARY
Highs: Superb casting throughout. Canvas top for the cab is excellent. Lots of extras that can be used on vehicles from the 1970's to present day.
Lows: No interior frame for the canvas top.
Verdict: Highly recommended. Really well done set that should make any modeler glad they purchased it.

About Rick Cooper (clovis899)
FROM: CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES

I have been modeling for about 30 years now. Once upon a time in another century I owned my own hobby shop; way more work than it was worth. I tip my opti-visor to those who make a real living at it. Mainly build armor these days but I keep working at figures, planes and the occasional ship.

Put everything back int he box and discovered another sheet of the C-rats stuck to the inside. So...enough to make 6 ration boxes included in the set!
